What is chiropractic care?
Invented in the 1890s by Daniel D. Palmer, chiropractic is an alternative form of health care that is dedicated to the nonsurgical treatment of disorders of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. It is a holistic approach to health that focuses on prevention and rehabilitation.

According to Gray’s Anatomy, “The nervous system is the most complicated and highly-organized of the various systems which make up the human body.” Chiropractic care is based on the idea that misalignments of the spinal column may alter normal transmission of nerve impulses, causing discomfort, pain, or other symptoms felt in various places in the body.

In general, the main chiropractic technique is manual therapy, especially spinal manipulation. Related forms of manual therapy, sometimes used in conjunction with spinal manipulation, include massage, osteopathy, physical therapy, and sports medicine.

What are the benefits of receiving chiropractic care?
Rather than treating the symptoms of disease, chiropractic can help the body help itself by enabling the body to work at its best. A chiropractor performs manual adjustments to realign the spine and surrounding structures, thereby helping the body to better recuperate on its own.

Chiropractic therapy provides these benefits:
Restores alignment of the spine  This type of manipulation involves applying a rapid thrust to misaligned vertebra (called a subluxation) to reduce nerve irritation and restore range of motion of the back and spine.
Increases mobility to joints with tissue injury  Gentle, slow manipulation and stretching of joints and muscles stimulates the normal functions of the cells and tissues and helps them heal.
Relieves and prevents headaches  Some patients seek spinal manipulation to prevent migraines and treat tension headaches.
Supports immune system  Patients also opt for chiropractic care to maintain their overall health and wellness by boosting their immune systems to ward off illness.

Which symptoms and systems benefit from chiropractic care?
Spinal manipulation is the most common treatment used in chiropractic care. It is also called “spinal adjustment” or “chiropractic adjustment.” Many studies have shown that chiropractic therapies are very effective for the treatment and relief of lower back pain, radiculopathy (due to lumbar herniated disc) and neck pain. Patients seek chiropractic care for various reasons, including:
Low back pain
Neck pain
Muscle pain
Fibromyalgia pain
Joint pain
Maintaining general health
Supporting the immune system

Preventive health benefits
The initial chiropractic consultation begins with a comprehensive physical examination. It may also include laboratory testing, X-rays, or other diagnostic imaging if needed. After completing a thorough health history and evaluating symptoms and complaints, a chiropractor decides which noninvasive therapies will be most beneficial for his or her patient.

To further support overall health and encourage patients to take charge of their health, chiropractors generally:
Recommend exercises to help with rehabilitation.
Provide nutritional and dietary education.
Suggest choices for a healthy lifestyle.
